Marc Lawrence was an American character actor who specialized in underworld types. In 1930, Lawrence befriended another young actor, John Garfield. The two appeared in a number of plays before Lawrence was given a film contract with Columbia Pictures. Lawrence appeared in films beginning in 1931. Garfield followed, starting his film career in 1938. Lawrence's pock-marked complexion, brooding appearance and New York street-guy accent made him a natural for heavies, and he played scores of gangsters and mob bosses over the next six decades. Later, Lawrence found himself under scrutiny for his political leanings. When called before the House Un-American Activities Committee, he admitted he had once been a member of the Communist Party. He named Sterling Hayden, Lionel Stander, Anne Revere, Larry Parks, Karen Morley and Jeff Corey as Communists. He was blacklisted and departed for Europe, where he continued to make films. Following the demise of the blacklist, he returned to America and resumed his position as a familiar and talented purveyor of gangland types. He played gangsters in two James Bond movies: 1971's Diamonds Are Forever opposite Sean Connery, and 1974's The Man with the Golden Gun opposite Roger Moore. He also portrayed a henchman opposite Laurence Olivier in Marathon Man (1976) and a stereotypical Miami mob boss alongside Jerry Reed and Dom DeLuise in the comedy Hot Stuff (1979). Marc is a 45-year veteran of the sports handicapping industry, having won more documented Top-10 handicapping achievement awards than anyone in the nation – including winning the STARDUST INVITATIONAL FOOTBALL INVITATIONAL in 2005. He publishes the PLAYBOOK Football Preview Guide magazine – in its 29th year this season – and is heard on leading radio stations and podcasts all across the nation. In addition, Marc also authors a weekly NFL column from a Vegas perspective for the USA TODAY Sports Weekly. Through his many years of invaluable experience, Marc strives to inform players on how to achieve success while avoiding the pitfalls of sports betting. His primary style of handicapping is technical as he relies heavily on his proprietary database, while he also incorporates the other two primary forms of handicapping – fundamental and statistical – into his handicapping portfolio. A contrarian by nature, Marc loves ferreting out lives dogs that stand a good chance of winning the game. His “Woody Hayes” approach to handicapping is simple: Hayes’ contention was that when you pass the ball three things can happen, and two of them are bad. In the same vein, when you bet on a favorite three things can happen and two of them are bad. Hence, when you bet on a live dog three things can happen and two of them are good. Or, in the words of immortal rocker Meat Loaf, “Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad” (actually it’s damn good). He’s been happily married to his high school sweetheart, Colleen,...
